A federal judge in Brazil ruled to halt the construction of the controversial Belo Monte dam project, citing that it would threaten fishing, thus disrupting one of the principal livelihoods of local indigenous people.

“Para state federal judge Carlos Eduardo Castro Martins on Wednesday barred Norte Energia from “building a port, using explosives, installing dikes, building canals and any other infrastructure work that would interfere with the natural flow of the Xingu River, thereby affecting local fish”…If the company fails to comply, it would be fined 200,000 reais (about 109,500 dollars) a day, officials said.”

The dam project would be the third largest in the world and is one of the main parts of Brazil’s energy plan for the future.
